The study investigated ways of enhancing specific and generic employability skills intrinsic to music technology teaching while working in close collaboration with industry partners and Lancaster University graduates.
This article explores the relationship between the creative skills taught as part of the music technology BA course at Lancaster University and the skills valued by graduates and employers in the creative industries. Beyond a direct benefit to pedagogues, it is hoped that this review of the literature can provide a starting point for research in critical listening education. A range of specific instructional activities, such as technical ear training, is also explored, thus providing insights into training in this field. Moreover this paper uncovers pedagogical best practice for training sequence and the use of sounds/sight within instruction. Consequently a range of common curriculum topics is advanced as the focus areas in current practice. To provide a basis for the development of curriculum and training, this paper investigates both academic and non-academic work in the field. Furthermore audio engineering textbooks often view critical listening as secondary to technical concepts. Broadly speaking, academic research in this field is often limited to qualitative descriptions of curriculum and studies on the effectiveness of technical ear training. The app will allow you to browse frequency altered tones, noise and/or musical loops to train yourself and then also has a series of multiple choice quizzes where the app plays a loop and you have to identify the problem frequency.
There’s an add-on available that adds bass and electric guitar too. Version 1 of the app features frequency identification via exercises using: The app works like this: put on your headphones, launch the app, and it trains you to identify different frequencies. Turns out, this app offers everything offered in that Berklee class of mine… in an app! So I decided to check out Quiztones by Audiofile Engineering, especially after being so blown away by the last app I reviewed, FiRe2.
